KONA, HAWAII

Our beloved girl, Kristen, who Miriam has been fortunate to have in her life since she was 15 (mid ’90’s) and came to live with the family, still introduces her to all as her mom. She and her husband Jamie, daughter Layla (15) and son Goose (12) welcomed us with open arms. A true gentleman, Goose surrendered his room to us for the 4 days we were there.

3AM and our jet lag goofiness must have been funny for Layla.

The family pets were 3 indoor/outdoor cats and a rescue dog named Mando who was adopted at the beginning of the pandemic. We came home one evening to find that Mando had gone to our room and eaten our roasted nuts, chewed on a small gift, and managed to chew into a medicine bottle and eat all 47 thyroid pills! We all freaked out except for Mando – he seemed not to be phased at all. Layla spent the next couple of hours figuring how to purge him and slept with him outside. But in the end, all seemed not to matter. Desiccated porcine thyroid was just another doggie snack for the canine with what must be a cast iron stomach.

If someone ever offers you a white pineapple, even if you are not fond of pineapple, accept it! This was a baby one, gifted by Uncle Bob, and he had gotten it from a friend on barter. Lots of bartering for goods and services in Kona. From his own trees, Uncle Bob also brought us mangos and navel oranges So along with that melt in your mouth pineapple, Miriam was in “hog heaven”. Unfortunately, that long platter of cut up fruit  was devoured before we could grab a camera😋

P.S. We need to put in a commercial plug for Kristen. She is a gifted educator with years of experience in numerous educational environments with exceptional intuition and profound sensitivity to children. She specializes in helping children who under-achieve in traditional classrooms. If you have, or know someone who has a child who could be doing better academically, check her out!
